A first statue of the Madonna of Carpignano was made on the occasion of the Solemn Coronation of the painting of the Madonna, whose decree of issue bears the date of 4th May 1945, but the actual coronation took place on 18th August 1945, on the feast of the Madonna of Carpignano, which then took place not on the first Sunday of September, but on the Sunday following the 15th August.
For that occasion, a statue of the Madonna was carved in wood that reproduced the features of the image of the table.
Unfortunately, this first statue was destroyed during the earthquake of 23rd November 1980.
During the following year, a new processional state of the Madonna of Carpignano was made of papier-mache.
